THE SKILLS

Resilience courses are available to 9 to 13 year old children.

Through the courses, kids learn such skills as:
  • Bouncing back from setbacks
  • Decision making
  • Generating alternative thoughts using evidence
  • Problem solving
  • Negotiation and Compromise
  • Decatastrophising, and
  • Optimistic thinking styles

Furthermore, kids com
e to understand the well accepted formula that the way that we 'feel' is largely determined by the way that we 'think' about situations. Kids gain experience in dealing with the 'most-likely' rather than the worst case scenarios, and also in re-framing setbacks as 'temporary' rather than generalising them to other areas of their life. This not only assists children to see a problem in perspective, but to recognise that he or she has a choice about how to respond.

We find that the kids grasp the concepts very well, and not just learn them, but also begin applying them in their lives. This can have a profound effect on enjoyment, and success across a range of areas such as schoolwork, family life and in their interaction with friends.

Most kids that attend the course do so to improve life skills rather than to overcome specific problems, so the atmosphere is one of positive and enthusiastic learning. The courses are not suitable for children with behaviour problems.
